Anthropocene Man (A poem about civilized Homo Sapien)

The sun is shining, The birds are chirping
But the Anthropocene man is busy lurking Behind dim-lit screens, scurrying, scrolling
Creating a ‘presence’ on the internet.

The Anthropocene man has had humanity kicked out of him
For he has not hunted, or gathered, or thanked what birthed him
He consumes and consumes in greed and assertion
He destroys all that could ever pass him

The Anthropocene man is distraught and anxious
His primitive brain is confused and nauseous
Where is the movement?
Where is the nourishment?
Where is the love that was responsible for evolution?

The Anthropocene man, lonely and desperate
Seeks quite refuge behind the screen of the internet
Scrolls and consumes ideas about politics and worldly matters
But oh, does he not know that these are designed for division?

The Anthropocene man is an addict as he consumes drugs of various types for survival
Social Media, Caffeine, Sugar, Pharmaceutical Pills
They must be consumed for survival, he tells himself.
As he consumes, his ego enlarges, therefore his narrative of himself grows.

But the Anthropocene man does not question this way of life -
For he has been told this is the best way to live.
Civilization is a superior form of existence -
Even though he dreads the daily commute and the Monday Blues,
Or he pops the pills the ‘treat’ the diseases that civilization has given him
But well, he’s convinced this is it.

A lifetime spent staring at a screen, sedentary, separated in species isolation.
Until the diseases catch up and kill him slowly,
Like a dormant seed that has never touched the earth and felt her nourishment.
The Anthropocene man has never lived, but lived a life of slow death and suffering.
